Everything passes through, and in summer you notice

The Veneto sits on the road that links Milan to Trieste and to eastern Europe, and on the one that comes down from the Brenner towards Bologna: that is why it is easy to reach from any direction, and also why in summer the A4 between Verona and Venice queues at weekends.

By car and motorhome

The A4 Serenissima crosses the region by way of Verona, Vicenza, Padua and Mestre; at Mestre the bypass, opened in 2009, carries it further north and avoids the urban knot. From above comes the A22 from the Brenner, which crosses the A4 at Verona; from the south the A13 from Bologna to Padua; towards the Dolomites the A27 climbs from Venice to Belluno.

For the coastal campsites you leave at Noventa di Piave or San Dona for Jesolo and Caorle, and carry on along the coast road; for the Cavallino you pass through Jesolo and drive the peninsula to Punta Sabbioni. For Garda you leave at Peschiera and follow the Veronese shore on the Gardesana orientale, which is narrow and clogs on summer Sundays.

You do not drive into Venice: you leave the car at Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto, which are expensive, or at Mestre or Punta Sabbioni, which cost less and have the vaporetto.

By train

The Milan to Venice high speed line stops at Verona, Vicenza, Padua, Venezia Mestre and Venezia Santa Lucia, which is the only Italian station with vaporetti in front of it. From Mestre the lines leave for Treviso, Udine and Trieste, and the Venice to Calalzo, which climbs the Piave to the foot of the Dolomites.

By plane

There are three airports: Venice Marco Polo, among the busiest in Italy, ten kilometres from Mestre, with a bus and a boat into the city; Treviso Canova, used by the low cost airlines; and Verona Villafranca, convenient for Garda. From Marco Polo the boat reaches San Marco in a little over an hour.
